PETALING JAYA: The heads of Pakatan Harapan component parties are questioning whether Idrus Harun’s advice is an act of treason.
Saying this could be tantamount to treason, the opposition leaders said it also contradicted the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to all party leaders on Aug 17 at Istana Negara that this should be the first thing to do when Parliament sits again.
They reminded Idrus that he was also present at the audience with the King, and clearly heard the King saying this.
“Thus, it’s illogical for the AG to state that the prime minister’s appointment cannot be overturned as it was decreed by the King himself.
“We demand that Idrus resign as he is not worthy of heading the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” the PH leaders said in a statement.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah head Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Yesterday, Idrus had said there was no need for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to table the confidence motion, stating that if Ismail’s legitimacy needed to be tested by any party other than the King, it would mean the King’s absolute power could be overridden.
This, Idris had said, was not in line with the Federal Constitution.
However, the PH presidential council said tabling of the confidence motion in Parliament was the right process to show the new prime minister has the majority support, after replacing Muhyiddin Yassin.
Furthermore, it said such a motion had been tabled in January 1976, 12 days after Hussein Onn was appointed as the prime minister to replace Abdul Razak Hussein, who passed away while in office.
As such, the party leaders added, the statement by Idrus was “rude” and not in the spirit of the Federal Constitution and went against the wishes of the King.
They further stated that PH upholds the royal decree to have a confidence motion when Parliament resumes on Sept 13.
“The prime minister should not follow the advice of the attorney-general as it is wrong.
“He should not follow in the footsteps of the 8th prime minister (Muhyiddin Yassin) who caused political instability after his majority was frequently disputed,” they said. - FMT
