GEORGE TOWN: The Penang assembly today renominated DAP’s Lim Hui Ying for another three years of senatorship, following the expiry of her term last week.
Lim, 58, a University of Malaya economics graduate, is Penang DAP secretary. She was the election campaign director for the party at the state level for the 2013 and 2018 polls.
She is also the daughter of party stalwart Lim Kit Siang and sister of party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Another nominee, PKR’s Mohd Yusmadi Yusoff was dropped. Instead, 44-year-old Fadhlina Siddiq, the daughter of former Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) president Dr Siddiq Fadzil, who passed away yesterday, was nominated.
The late Siddiq, had taken over the helm at Abim after Anwar Ibrahim left to join Umno in 1983.
Fadhlina is a lawyer and the legal and community development bureau chief for PKR’s women’s wing.
Yusmadi was a one-term Balik Pulau MP in 2008 and is a lawyer. Up to last month, he was the senate reform committee chairman.
Deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy (PH-Perai) moved a motion to support Lim, while Fadhlina was proposed by deputy chief minister I Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman (PH-Pinang Tunggal).
The nominations were unanimously supported by the House. The state assembly can nominate two persons for federal senatorship as Penang’s representatives in Dewan Negara for a three-year term. - FMT
