KUALA LUMPUR: All MPs on both sides of the divide will be given equal allocations for the remainder of the year, deputy special functions minister Mastura Mohd Yazid announced today.

Mastura told the Dewan Rakyat that this decision to give MPs in both the government and opposition equal funds for September to December was agreed to by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

A memorandum of understanding signed between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) earlier this month states that equal funding would be provided for government and opposition MPs, though, for the latter, this was limited to those who were “involved” in the pact.

In her winding-up speech on the King’s address, Mastura said Putrajaya took note of calls by various MPs for equal allocation regardless of their bloc.

Among the MPs who called for this were Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Independent-Muar), Azis Jamman (Warisan-Sepanggar), Nazri Aziz (BN-Padang Rengas) and Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PH-Kapar).

“The allocation for parliamentary constituencies to government and opposition MPs with varying amounts previously was according to policies. It was also dependent on the government’s financial position.

“The prime minister is committed to implementing parliamentary transformation, and for that reason, I want to inform the House that for the remaining four months of this year, the prime minister has agreed to give equal allocations to all MPs, whether in the government or opposition.” -FMT
