Fourfold increase in KL’s hardcore poor

Shahidan Kassim says his ministry has carried out various programmes to help the hardcore poor.

KUALA LUMPUR: More families in Kuala Lumpur have fallen into the hardcore poor category with 4,815 households reported to be in this group compared to 1,109 last year.

Federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim said in his ministerial reply in the Dewan Rakyat that the number of households classified as poor had also more than doubled from 2,200 in 2020 to 5,617 this year.

He said his ministry had been carrying out various social, economic and welfare programmes to ease their burden.

Some of the measures were rental exemption for over 4,000 tenants in public housing in Kuala Lumpur and a delay in repayment of loans for over 6,000 traders in public housing areas.

There were also rental exemptions for 6,000 traders, one-off payment of RM500 to 23,000 stall operators and food aid to 65,000 families in Kuala Lumpur and 1,000 families in Putrajaya.

Other measures were back-to-school vouchers for 26,000 students.

More centres as well as food and clothing for the homeless were also being considered, he added.

On the reopening of public parks and recreational areas, he said the ministry was waiting for a response to its request to the National Security Council. - FMT
