Hadi Awang expected to retain top post in PAS elections, says source

Abdul Hadi Awang has been PAS president since 2002.

PETALING JAYA: Abdul Hadi Awang is expected to retain his post as PAS president during the 67th PAS annual general assembly and central leadership elections in November.

A source close to the matter told FMT that those who opposed Hadi had left the party in 2015 to form Amanah and since then “PAS has been harmonious”.

“Usually, the president’s post is not challenged. The only exception was in 2015 but that rival camp lost and has since left PAS,” he said.

Hadi, 73, has held the president’s post since 2002.

Commenting further, the source said the elections and AGM would be held in a hybrid setting, with syura council members, central committee and state commissioners to attend in person. Others will join in virtually.

The main venue of the meeting will be in Kuala Terengganu.

The source added that PAS was at present holding meetings at the branch level while the meetings at the constituency level will begin in mid-October.

“Conventions at the state level will be held in early November. These will end with the annual conference at the central level,” he said.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan told Harakah Daily that the AGM will observe strict SOPs in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said more than 1,000 delegates were expected to attend, with the majority of them attending it virtually. - FMT
