More than half of students feel 'pressured' due to online learning

More than half of the students surveyed by the Education Ministry said they felt pressured due to online home-based learning.

This is according to a survey conducted between March and July last year involving 39,967 teachers, 52,413 students and 59,624 parents.

“Of the students, 51.2 percent said they felt pressured due to home-learning.

“From that group, 48.9 percent said they felt pressured due to the limited interaction with their teachers while 55 percent said they felt pressured due to limited interaction with their peers.

“53.4 percent of students also said they felt pressured due to a lack of guidance during the learning session,” the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply.

The written reply was in response to a question raised by Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, who asked Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin to disclose how well home-based learning was working out amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The survey also found that online home-based learning was slow in the initial stages last year but had picked up by the second half of this year.

The survey last year showed only 59.3 percent of urban students participated in home-based learning while the participation for rural students was at 51.4 percent.

“The survey showed the effectiveness of home-based learning to be moderate.

“34.1 percent of the students said the learning outcome at home is not the same compared with learning in schools,” Radzi said in the written reply.

However, more recent data from Jan 20 to Aug 30 this year showed that students’ participation in online home-based learning had improved.

During this period, the involvement of primary school students in online home-based learning had increased from 87.1 percent to 99.2 percent, while secondary school students increased from 78 percent to 97.3 percent.

In a separate written reply, Radzi said the government, through Yayasan Hasanah, had distributed 111,040 out of the targeted 150,000 laptops to B40 students to aid them in their e-learning.

Another 38,960 are in the midst of being distributed. The target is by the end of this month.
