PETALING JAYA: A total of 76,786 divorce petitions were filed nationwide from March 2020 to August this year.
Of that number, 66,440 involved Muslims, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
He disclosed the number in a reply to Hasan Bahrom (PH-Tampin), who asked for statistics on divorces in rural communities during the pandemic and measures the government was taking to address the issue.
Ismail said there was no data based on urban or rural areas, but Selangor had recorded the highest number of Muslim registered divorces at 12,479 between March 2020 and August this year.
This was followed by Johor (7,558) and Kedah (5,985).
Among non-Muslim marriages, Selangor again recorded the highest number of divorces with 3,160, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,893) and Perak (1,209). - FMT
