KOTA KINABALU: Sabah registered a record high 87 Covid-19 deaths in the past one day. Sandakan recorded the highest at 24 cases, local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said.

The previous record of 84 deaths was recorded on Sept 12.

The other places where deaths were recorded were: Tawau (14), Tuaran (8), Kota Kinabalu (6), Lahad Datu and Keningau (5 each), Kota Marudu (4), Ranau and Kota Belud (3 each), Beaufort, Kinabatangan, Penampang, Beluran, Semporna and Papar (2 each), and Nabawan, Kalabakan and Tongod (1 each).

“However, the number of deaths did not necessarily happen in the last 24 hours,” said Masidi who is also the state’s official Covid-19 spokesman in his daily statement today. “There are deaths that took time to verify and were reported later than the actual date.”

This brings the death toll in Sabah to 2,036.

As for daily infections, the state recorded 1,199 new cases in the last one day, pushing the cumulative cases to 189,322.

Masidi also said the number of Sabahans who have completed their vaccination had essentially reached 60% after taking into account the number of Sabahans residing in the peninsula.

He said it was safe to assume 60% of Sabah’s population have been fully inoculated as of yesterday, with the vaccination rate reaching 59.4% on Sept 20.

The statistics department estimated the adult Sabah population to be around 2,758,400. However, food basket distribution numbers, showed that a total of 171,963 food baskets were given to heads of households originating from Sabah but who are in the peninsula. “And there are many Sabah residents who have also been vaccinated there,” he said. - FMT
