PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) has called on the government to reopen the business events industry to those who are fully vaccinated.

MyCEB chief executive officer Abdul Khani Daud said today that it was crucial for the government to understand that business events could operate safely and responsibly with strict SOPs, and that the industry could contribute to economic recovery.

Khani said the sector could operate safely by providing a controlled, regulated and secure environment for the commencement of business events.

He said this would include contact tracing of all event attendees and strict compliance with government guidelines on hygiene and physical distancing.

“Since its establishment, MyCEB has helped the country secure more than 1,300 events since 2010-2020 and delivered an estimated RM11.4 billion in total (to the economy),” he said.

Khani added that business events were not social gatherings as its activities involved corporate and governmental meetings, conferences, exhibitions and incentive travel groups.

He said these activities not only brought a huge direct economic impact, but more importantly helped boost content creation, exchange of ideas, professional development and investment opportunities.

“Unfortunately, since the pandemic, Malaysia has recorded 57 postponements and 66 cancellations of international events.

“Despite the challenging times, MyCEB continues to work with the stakeholders in bidding for international events whereby 164 business events have been secured from 2022 to 2030,” he said. - FMT
