Rep wants transparency in major Cameron Highlands projects

Tanah Rata assemblyperson Chiong Yoke Kong wants the Pahang government to be transparent on major development projects it has planned for Cameron Highlands.

He noted that Cameron Highlands is an environmentally sensitive area and has seen a number of disasters such as flash floods and landslides, in part due to overdevelopment.

This was after local environmentalists and activists voiced concern over an RM100 million ski theme park on a 60-acre plot in Cameron Highlands.

Prior to this, Chiong (above) said he had also raised concerns about a separate mixed-development project which was supposed to be a joint-venture between the Cameron Highlands District Council and a subsidiary of LBS Bina Group, with a gross development value of RM1.5 billion.

He has, since April, urged the state government to disclose more information about the project, pointing out that limited information had been released to the public.

"The mixed development project that spans an area measuring 51.32 acres and worth as much as RM1.5 billion will undoubtedly bring about major changes to the natural ecosystem of Cameron Highlands," Chiong has then said on his Facebook posting

More recently, Singapore-listed theme park developer Sim Leisure Group was looking to build a theme park featuring the "region's first outdoor ski attraction" in Cameron Highlands.

However, poor enforcement and uncontrolled development in Cameron Highlands have been blamed for a number of disasters.

In 2013, Cameron Highlands was hit by flash floods that left three people dead

The area has also seen several landslides over the years, exacerbated by unauthorised land clearing for farming.
