A number of laws will be amended to ensure their relevancy and effectiveness in improving public safety and security, according to the 12th Malaysian Plan (12MP).
The laws include the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) 1959, Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012, Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) 2015 as well as the Penal Code 1957.
The Sedition Act 1948 and the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 will also be reviewed.
These are part of efforts to strengthen the governance of security in the country, in order to improve the upholding of public safety and security.
“These efforts will ensure rules and regulations are better enforced, achieving higher trust in institutions and strengthening national defence and security,” the 12MP report read.
Apart from that, anti-corruption measures will also be strengthened across all enforcement agencies and the military.
Build a more tolerant society
The 12MP also addressed efforts in building a more tolerant society, including promoting the ethical use of digital platforms and reviewing certain laws.
“Ethical digital media usage will be incorporated in relevant academic programmes as well as co-curricular activities in schools and higher education institutions.
“Several provisions in existing laws such as the Penal Code, Sedition Act, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 will be reviewed and strengthened to curb the proliferation of malicious and seditious materials as well as fake news that threaten national unity and harmony,” the report read.
However, the 12MP report did not elaborate on any details with regard to the potential amendments and reviews of the legislation. - Mkini
