A PKR Senator has called on Women, Families and Community Development Minister Rina Harun to set a date for the draft Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill to be tabled in this current Parliament session beginning today.
Senator Fadhlina Sidek (above), who was recently sworn in, said this was as Rina had made similar promises in the past but the draft Bill continue to be left out of past parliament proceedings.
"This is not the first time Rina has given such expectations on the tabling of the draft Bill...
"I would like to urge Rina to set an accurate timeline and not just mere expectations that shows her lack of commitment towards urgently bringing this agenda (to Parliament)," Fadhlina, a PKR Women's wing leader and lawyer by profession, said.
She was responding to Rina's statement yesterday that the draft Bill, currently under review by the Attorney-General's Chambers, is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat during the current session, which will end on Oct 12.
Rina, who was retained in her ministerial position by current Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration, had inherited the draft bill from the Pakatan Harapan government.
Fadhlina also echoed calls by Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto, as well as other concerned individuals who came together as the Tampil Bersuara Secretariat, for more public engagement sessions and bipartisan consultation.
"At the same time focus must be given on advocacy programmes, public education and legal literacy on crimes of sexual harassment so that the people's understanding will move in line with the new provisions to be enforced," Fadhlina said. - Mkini
