Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang have both contracted Covid-19 and are now under quarantine, according to their respective aides.
Both cases were detected during screening at the parliament building today.
“Anwar will undergo self-quarantine for seven days in accordance with health protocols set by the Health Ministry,” his private secretary Shukri Saad said in a statement today.
He said the Port Dickson MP tested positive during testing conducted at the parliament building.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Lim’s political secretary Syahredzan Johan said the DAP stalwart also tested positive using an RTK-Ag test at parliament today and again during a subsequent PCR test.
“He has been vaccinated and also taken his booster shot, and thus far, he only has light symptoms such as coughing.
“He is currently under quarantine according to the usual quarantine protocols,” he said.
The announcement comes just a day after Lim announced his plan to retire from politics yesterday, at the party’s annual congress at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
Other prominent politicians who recently contracted the disease include PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said.
Meanwhile, in Negeri Sembilan, both its state assembly speaker and deputy speaker have fallen ill, along with many state legislature staffers, causing the state assembly sitting slated for today to be postponed. -Mkini
