PARLIAMENT | Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun will decide if Najib Abdul Razak's (BN-Pekan) remark on the repayment of 1MDB has misled the Parliament after receiving a response from Tony Pua (Pakatan Harapan-Damansara).
"I have received an explanation from Najib. It is quite thick. I have studied the explanation and I give Pua some time to respond to the explanation," Azhar (above) told the Dewan Rakyat today.
"After getting an answer from Pua, I will make a decision. This is quite complicated as it involves facts and specific details, which I really have to pay attention to on whether what he said is misleading or not," he added.
RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) asked why Najib was yet to be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee for misleading the august House.
Najib said no repayment was made on the principal amount of 1MDB while Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government only repaid the interest incurred in the 1MDB debts, and the principal amount will only be repaid in May, upon the maturity of the first bond, according to Azhar.
"There are contradictions in their remarks. That's why I sat with Pua to tell him what had been said by Najib. Pua needs to give an answer before I make a decision," Azhar added.
Najib told the Dewan Rakyat on March 2 that not a single sen was used to repay the principal amount of 1MDB debts because various entities, including Goldman Sachs, audit firms KPMG and Deloitte, Ambank and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had returned 1MDB funds totalling RM23 billion to Malaysia.
This prompted Pua to submit a motion to refer Najib to the Parliamentary Committee of Privileges for misleading the House over his debate on 1MDB debts.
Zaful also rebutted Najib's remark that the government has yet to make payment on the principal amount of 1MDB debts. He said Malaysia has been paying the interest on the 1MDB debts. - Mkini
