UndiJohor: Many flaws in EC's overseas voting system

The UndiJohor initiative has urged the Election Commission (EC) to address several flaws with its overseas voting system.

In a statement today, UndiJohor said they received complaints of ballot papers arriving late or being addressed to the wrong place.

In some cases, there were also errors in the name or MyKad number of the recipient.

The Johor legislative assembly was dissolved on Jan 23. On Feb 8, the EC decided to allow overseas voting by post for the subsequent election, albeit limited to neighbouring countries.

To participate, a voter will have to register their details on the EC website.

UndiJohor said that the registration system too had flaws because it required a TAC code.

A solution, said Undi Johor, was to allow postal voting registration at embassies.

UndiJohor added that the EC must also conduct voter education initiatives to inform those who have automatically been added to the voter list about their responsibility to vote.

"Our surveys have shown that many youths don't know they can vote or how they can do so," said Undi Johor.

Meanwhile, UndiJohor said they had helped to bring 3,700 postal votes from Singapore and sponsored RM5,450 in travel subsidies for the Johor elections.

UndiJohor is an offshoot of Undi18 - a pressure group set up in 2017 advocating for lowering the voting age. - Mkini
