Joget lambak: No alcohol sold, attendance strictly by invitation – village chief

An Orang Asli tok batin has dismissed claims that organisers of the joget lambak (traditional dance performances) sell alcoholic beverages and allow vices to occur during the event.

Kampung Chang Lama village chief Dahil Yok Chopil said organisers of the jogek lambak - usually held to celebrate birthdays, weddings and thanksgiving events - would check attendees’ belongings the night before to ensure no alcoholic beverages are brought in.

“If someone brings them, we will resolve the issue among us,” he told Malaysiakini.

Earlier, a letter from the Tapah Islamic Religious Administrative Office prohibiting Malays from attending joget lambak organised by Orang Asli villages in Batang Padang, Perak, went viral on social media.

The letter cited concerns over practices at the event, including idolatry, alcohol consumption, and immoral activities.

Dahil said he had not received the Islamic agency’s letter, but pointed out that guests to the event are strictly by invitation.

“We don’t allow those uninvited because sometimes, the city people will bring drugs and create problems.

“And we have never invited the Malays to join the joget lambak, it’s for those invited only… if got others (uninvited guests), we will ask them to leave,” he stressed.

On claims of fornication (persetubuhan haram) and close proximity (khalwat), Dahil said that it rarely happens.

“It’s because we Orang Asli strictly hold on to our customs and traditions,” he added. - Mkini
