Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said his focus is on maintaining peace and security when asked about the contentious issue of hudud law in Malaysia.
“Certainly not because we are not in the position to execute them (hudud law). We will have to build a consensus if that's what the vast majority want. Not likely for now,” Anwar was quoted as saying by Bernama today.
He reportedly said this in a recent interview with British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan.
According to the Bernama report, Anwar explained that hudud is often used as a political tool, especially during elections.
“When in power, they claim ‘hudud is not our priority now’. It’s clear that for them, it's more about political manoeuvring. In Islam, we must address priorities, and for me, peace and security come first,” he said.
He reportedly emphasised that the focus should be on real, pressing issues in navigating the challenges of the world today.
“With the complexities of today’s digitalisation and energy transitions, we should focus on these real challenges.
“Key priorities must include improving the quality of education, providing better healthcare, and tackling the essential bread-and-butter issues, instead of discussing topics that the opposition knows will never be implemented,” Anwar said.
Anwar also reportedly highlighted Malaysia’s position as a multiracial and multireligious nation.
According to Bernama, he pointed out how Malaysia's success in fostering unity within its diverse society serves as an example of how a Muslim-majority country can thrive through good governance and tolerance.
“In a world where there's so much deficit, trust deficit, contradictions, hypocrisy, racism, religious fanaticism, Malaysia must be able to showcase that a multiracial, multireligious country can make it through good governance,” he added. - Mkini
