Anti-Anwar rally speech lands lawyer in second sedition probe

Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said he has once again been targeted by a sedition probe, claiming there were external pressures on authorities to act against voices critical of the government.

The Pejuang information chief said he was contacted by the Dang Wangi district police criminal investigation unit and will be present for questioning tomorrow (Nov 1) at 2.30pm.

“A police report was lodged over my speech, said to be viral on social media.

“According to the person who lodged the report, my speech was made at the Save Malaysia ‘People’s Court Punish Anwar’ rally in Perak on July 27,” Rafique (above) said without elaborating.

“I will be present at Dang Wangi district police headquarters tomorrow, 2.30pm because, to me, the police are only carrying out their duties,” he added.

Malaysiakini has contacted Dang Wangi district police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman for comments.

Seeds of dictatorship

Further, Rafique said he will also be investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

In alleging attempts to stifle views critical of the government, Rafique expressed hope that the media will continue to be free and fair.

“And to the people, it has been my constant reminder, any pressure by any government on the right to freedom of speech and the right to voice opinions, those are the seeds of a dictatorial regime.

“I will continue to speak so long as there are parties who go against any democratic values,” he stressed.

In July, Rafique was questioned under the Sedition Act for his speech labelling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim a “scammer” for alleged unfulfilled promises.

At the time, Rafique said he was questioned about the content of his speech delivered during an anti-government rally in June held outside the prime minister’s official residence in Putrajaya. - Mkini
