KUALA TERENGGANU
Police have arrested 12 students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) in connection with an assault on a fellow student.

Acting Kuala Terengganu police chief, Wan Zaki Wan Ismail, said the arrests were made following a report from a man claiming that his 20-year-old son had been assaulted at the university’s dormitory, between 1am and 5am on Sunday.

“The victim informed his father of the assault by phone at 10.50pm on Sunday, while the complainant was at home in Melaka.

“The victim also sent several photos showing injuries to various parts of his body,” he said in a statement today.

The victim’s father arrived in Kuala Terengganu on Monday and immediately took his son to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment, where the student was later admitted.

Wan Zaki said the attending medical officer confirmed the victim had sustained bruises and internal injuries from blunt force trauma to his arms, waist, chest, abdomen, and leg.

He said all 12 suspects, aged between 20 and 22, have been remanded for four days, starting today, to assist with the investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

“The weapons used were also seized,” he added.

Separately, UMT’s corporate communications office issued a statement confirming that a report regarding misconduct by its students had been filed with the police.

The university said it viewed the incident seriously and would fully cooperate with the police in its investigation.

UMT also said it is conducting an internal investigation and stressed that all students must always adhere to the university’s rules and regulations.

“As a public university, UMT is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students, and will not compromise on these values.” - FMT
