PETALING JAYA: A former Selangor executive councillor has disagreed with the state government’s decision to raise the assessment tax rate for local authorities by 25%, describing the hike as “unbearable”.
In a Facebook post, Ronnie Liu said the increase was a “no-no”, and that the people were facing difficulties as it is.
“Do not add on to the burden. Many already find it hard to survive,” he added.
He urged the state government to review the rate, suggesting a 5% increase instead.
Liu, who previously oversaw the local government, research and development portfolio, said the majority of local councils were “doing very well”.
He added that the state government could help those which were not doing as well.
The new rate will take effect on Jan 1. Local government and tourism committee chairman Ng Suee Lim said the adjustment followed a review under the Local Government Act 1976, which requires the local authorities to update property valuation lists every five years.
He said the revised rates were expected to boost revenue for the local councils by RM355 million annually, and that the funds would be utilised to enhance infrastructure and public services across districts. - FMT
