UM students submit memo, want lecturer who 'sent nudes' suspended

 

The Universiti Malaya (UM) Feminism Club has called on the university to investigate and take firm action against an academic allegedly involved in sexual harassment, including sending nude photographs to students.

In line with this, the club submitted a memorandum demanding immediate action by the university administration against the professor in question.

The memorandum was handed over by club president Chin Jes Weng to a university representative.

The document outlined three key demands to the university:

1. Suspend the academic involved;

2. Conduct a fair and rigorous investigation into the case; and

3. Strengthen the existing anti-sexual harassment policy to address its shortcomings.

Before submitting the memorandum, members of the club gathered in front of the UM Chancellery building to demonstrate their concerns, chanting slogans such as "Long live students" and calling on the university to take firm action against the lecturer.

They also urged UM to ensure that the campus environment remains safe from the threat of sexual harassment.

The gathering lasted almost an hour before the memorandum was submitted, after which the participants dispersed.

‘We will monitor progess’

When approached, Chin stated that the assembly was not intended to criticise the university's administrative body.

“We will monitor the progress of this investigation (against the lecturer).

“We are not holding this press conference to criticise the administration, as we believe they will investigate the matter,” he said.

Yesterday, UM issued a statement confirming that it is investigating the allegations against the lecturer.

“UM confirms that it has received a report regarding the case raised by the UM Feminism Club, which has also been reported by several local media agencies,” the university said in its statement. - Mkini
