Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Kuala Terengganu MP Ahmad Amzad Hashim have reached a settlement in a defamation suit the Pakatan Harapan chairperson brought against the PAS lawmaker.
The Kuala Terengganu High Court today recorded the out of court settlement of the civil action, whereby Anwar retracted the lawsuit and Amzad (above, right) withdrew his impugned statement.
The civil suit was over allegations that Anwar lied about earning an RM1 salary when he was Selangor’s economic adviser.
Anwar was appointed to the position in 2009 and held it even after he was jailed in 2015. The RM1 salary was an annual token sum.
Via consent, the plaintiff withdrew the lawsuit with no liberty to refile and with no order as to costs.
‘Respect decision’
Judge Hassan Abdul Ghani recorded the settlement in which both parties agreed to end the personal legal dispute after taking into account there are far bigger and important issues that require attention.
Anwar's counsel Sankara Nair confirmed the outcome where the plaintiff and defendant expressed their appreciation to the judge and judicial officers.
"(Both plaintiff and defendant) also hope that this decision can be accepted and respected by all quarters and not be turned into something that could jeopardise the prosperity and harmony in Malaysia," Anwar and Amzad's joint public statement read.
