Perak BN chairman Saarani Mohamad said this is because the original date clashed with the national-level Aidilfitri celebration that will be taking place in Melaka, Bernama reported.
“The unity government leaders are all expected to be at the national-level Madani 2025 Aidilfitri celebration on April 5 in Melaka.
“We also have to consider that the next day, the highways are expected to be congested after the Hari Raya holidays.
“Therefore, we will officially name the candidate on April 7 in conjunction with the Tapah parliamentary constituency Aidilfitri celebration,” the Perak menteri besar told reporters after a function in Tapah today.
He said the announcement would be made by BN chairman and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The by-election for the Ayer Kuning state seat in Perak will be held on April 26. Nomination day has been set for April 12, with early voting scheduled for April 22.
The contest is being held following the death of Umno assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin on Feb 22.
Separately, Saarani said BN is not afraid of facing any candidate, including one from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), in a multi-cornered contest in the by-election.
He was responding to a report earlier today where PSM deputy chairman S Arutchelvan announced that the party would field a candidate in the by-election.
He said PSM put up a candidate for the Ayer Kuning state seat during the 15th general election. However, its candidate, Bawani KS, lost after having obtained only 586 votes. - FMT
