Cops arrest man over online threats, victim believed to be Firdaus Wong

A local man has been arrested for sending threats on Facebook, said Petaling Jaya district police chief Shahrulnizam Ja’afar.

Although the victim was not mentioned in the police statement, it is believed to be independent preacher Firdaus Wong, who claimed on March 21 that he received a death threat.

Shahrulnizam said the police also confiscated a mobile phone from the suspect as it was believed to have been used to send the threats.

He said the suspect was arrested yesterday around 1.30pm.

“The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, that is making criminal threats and criminal intimidation using telecommunication network services,” he said.

Firdaus claimed the death threat came after he questioned the establishment of religious sites illegally on other’s property on his social media page.

This was over the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur, which is slated to be demolished to make way for a mosque.

Lawyers for Liberty co-founder N Surendran had earlier claimed that the temple is now in a quandary due to Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) past actions despite the latter appearing to distance itself.

According to Shahrulnizam’s statement, the police received a report on the threat on March 21 around 4.18pm.

He called on those with further information to contact the police. - Mkini
