KUALA LUMPUR: Former international Gopi Rizqi's small drinks business in Pontian has gone viral, catching the attention of Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
The ex-Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) winger, who played for the club in 2017 and 2018, has set up a stall selling iced longan, corn drinks and kuih.
However, Gopi insists he is only doing it while recovering from a knee injury.
Despite claims of hardship, the former Harimau Malaya star insisted he is not facing financial difficulty, although his Klang Valley-based club in the A1 Semi-Pro League have failed to pay salaries for the past eight months.
Gopi met Tunku Mahkota Ismail on Friday, with the JDT owner sharing a snapshot of their meeting on social media.
The image showed them in a relaxed conversation.
Following the meeting, Gopi thanked Tunku Mahkota Ismail and offered prayers.
"May Allah bless and protect Tunku Mahkota Ismail," he wrote in an Instagram post.
Gopi has played for several top teams, including Pahang, Selangor, Melaka United, PDRM FC and Sarawak United.
During his time with Pahang, he lifted two Malaysia Cup titles and one FA Cup, while his stint with JDT saw him win the Super League and Malaysia Cup in 2017. - NST
