Ismail Sabri backs Anwar, denies 13 BN MPs rescinding support

Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has pledged his full support for his successor Anwar Ibrahim and the Madani government.

The Bera MP dismissed allegations that 13 BN federal lawmakers had withdrawn their backing.

"This story has been around for a long time, and at first, I didn’t want to entertain it because it wasn’t true, but it kept spreading through writings and videos.

"So, in the end, I felt compelled to respond. This claim that we have left is false. In reality, no one has left Umno or BN. Instead, we remain in the government," he told Sinar Harian.

Ismail Sabri, who is under MACC investigation, suggested that certain parties with malicious intent were spreading slander against the 13 MPs, particularly targeting him.

"It is also slander aimed at dividing us and creating distrust among BN MPs," he said.

Support evident

Holding the record as Malaysia’s shortest-serving prime minister with a tenure of 15 months, Ismail Sabri asserted that BN MPs’ full support for the government was evident through key parliamentary actions, such as the vote of confidence.

"When it was first tabled, all 30 BN MPs fully supported the motion, and every time a bill is brought forward, we give our full support,” he added.

Previously, BN secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir also denied claims of efforts to undermine unity among the party’s MPs.

MACC probe

The investigation into Ismail Sabri revolves around allegations of misappropriation linked to the expenditure and procurement of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.

The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

On March 3, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail Sabri was a suspect in the probe following the discovery of approximately RM170 million in various currencies and 16kg of gold bars in a safehouse during a raid. - Mkini
