Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred at 10.50pm on March 23 along Jalan Masjid Negeri.
He said the car was registered under a 32-year-old woman from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
Her husband was driving the vehicle during the incident, Rozak said.
“The 36-year-old man, who is an engineer, claimed he had just started working in Penang and was unfamiliar with its road directions. As a result, he mistakenly drove into the oncoming lane on Jalan Masjid Negeri,” he said in a statement.
The man has since been issued a summons under Rule 6(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
Rozak advised road users to plan their journeys or use online navigation applications to avoid mistakes that could endanger others.
Earlier, a 31-second video of the incident went viral, showing an individual driving against traffic on a busy road, sparking criticism from netizens. - FMT
