Don't let pro-Israel Trump 'trump' Asean, Amanah cautions Anwar

Amanah has cautioned Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to remain vigilant of the political manoeuvres of the United States, including those of its president, Donald Trump, and not to entrust the fate of the region to their hands or fall under their influence.

The party’s communications director, Khalid Abdul Samad, stressed that Malaysia’s long-standing non-aligned approach must continue to be upheld, and that ties with other nations, especially those within Brics, should be further strengthened.

“In line with this non-aligned stance, friendship with all parties is welcomed - in the interest of maintaining peace and shared development in the region. However, any efforts to sow discord, division, or conflict must be firmly opposed,” he added in a statement.

Khalid was responding to Anwar’s recent remarks, in which he recounted a conversation with Trump. The US president had congratulated and thanked Anwar for negotiating peace between Thailand and Cambodia in his capacity as the current Asean chairperson.

The prime minister also revealed that Trump plans to attend the 47th Asean Summit, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur this October.

Khalid said that while Amanah welcomes Trump’s intention to engage with Asean, the party emphasised that such involvement is only acceptable so long as it does not involve influencing or coercing Asean into serving American interests over its own priorities.

“As has become increasingly evident, American policy is heavily shaped by the interests of Zionist Israel, due to the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups such as AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), which funds many US political leaders.

“This is clearly demonstrated in the situation in Gaza, where, despite obvious atrocities, the US continues to offer support and funding,” he added.

Highlighting the shifting geopolitical landscape and the decline of a “single superpower” era, Khalid said there is no reason for Malaysia or Asean to blindly accept Trump’s proposals.

“His proposals will undoubtedly be designed to serve the interests of America and its key allies, particularly Israel,” the Amanah leader added.

Trump’s planned attendance at the Asean summit would have far-reaching geopolitical, diplomatic, and domestic implications for the region.

His presence might be seen as a counterweight to China’s growing influence, especially since China has intensified bilateral and regional ties with Asean. - Mkini
