'Harassment, misinformation': Sabah journos cry foul over Zara case

The Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) has raised the alarm over troubling incidents during media coverage of the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir.

From allegations of “harassment” to “misinformation,” SJA president Mariah Doksil urged all parties to respect journalistic standards and legal boundaries.

SJA revealed that it received reports of harassment during a recent press conference on the formation of an inquest into Zara’s death.

“An unidentified individual blended into the mainstream media area. Two female journalists reported feeling unsafe when the individual stood uncomfortably close to them. We call for stricter enforcement to protect working journalists,” Doksil said.

The association also noted that media coverage was disrupted by untrained individuals who entered press zones and later monetised livestreams intended for public information, a move it said undermines journalistic work and fuels confusion.

“False claims such as misreporting legal proceedings have been spread by unverified sources. Press conference access must prioritise registered media to ensure accurate reporting.

“Authorities must enforce access control in sensitive areas like courts and prohibit recordings where not allowed to avoid compromising media access.

“Responsible reporting, not sensationalism, best serves public interest and justice,” Doksil stressed.

Zara’s case has drawn national attention, with allegations of a cover-up and bullying further intensifying scrutiny beyond Sabah. - Mkini
