The world No 24 pair are the first Malaysian men's doubles champions at the Macau Open in 12 years.
The world No 24 Malaysians fought hard to upset Indonesia’s world No 8 pair Moh Reza Pahlevi-Sabar Karyaman Gutama 22-20, 21-18 in 79 minutes.
The match was repeatedly delayed as rainwater leaked through the roof of the Macau East Asian Games Dome, forcing officials to mop the court after almost every point.
Wan Arif-Roy King will take home US$29,230 (RM125,128) as champions, while the runners-up earn US$14,060 (RM60,188) from the BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
This is Wan Arif-Roy King’s first win in their three encounters with the Indonesian pair.
The win also ends Malaysia’s 12-year drought in the men’s doubles at the Macau Open. The last Malaysian pair to lift the crown was Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong in 2013.
Wan Arif-Roy King had previously reached the final of a World Tour event once – last year’s Spain Masters – but had to settle for runners-up.
Their best run this year was making the semi-finals of the Orleans Masters in France, while they also reached the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Masters, German Open and Thailand Open. - FMT
