Umno must be prepared to go solo in Kedah, says delegate

Kedah Umno Youth delegate Aswad Amin says Umno does not need to wait for others to determine its future in the northern state currently governed by PAS.

KUALA LUMPUR:
An Umno Youth delegate has urged the party to be prepared to go solo in Kedah in the next elections if it intends to regain control of the northern state.

Kedah Umno Youth delegate Aswad Amin said cooperation between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan was going nowhere in Kedah and Umno could not merely depend on a pact if it hoped to wrest the state.

“In my view, if nothing changes as the next general election (GE16) approaches, we shouldn’t be overly dependent on a particular pact, especially since it hasn’t been established yet in Kedah.

“We do not need to wait for others to determine Umno’s future in this state. If Umno needs to go it alone at the end of the day, we must not be afraid to do so.

“It’s not that we want to be at odds with anyone. But a party that wants to regain the trust of the people must first be confident in its own strength,” he said during the youth wing’s annual general assembly at Menara Dato Onn here.

Umno failed to win a single parliamentary seat in Kedah during the 2022 general election and was wiped out of the assembly in the state election the following year.

PAS holds the lion’s share of both parliamentary and state seats in Kedah. The Islamic party’s election director, Sanusi Nor, is the menteri besar.

BN’s ties with PH have deteriorated after the former worked with PAS-led Perikatan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan state election. However, the coalition has yet to confirm a pact with PN in GE16.

Aswad said Umno needs to rebuild the confidence of its grassroots and Malay voters in the party’s capabilities.

The Sungai Petani Umno Youth chief added that any political pact must translate into cooperation at the grassroots level, rather than remain merely superficial. - FMT
