PETALING JAYA:
The Johor government is ready to help schools in the state strengthen security measures and prevent similar incidents following the murder of a Form 4 student at a school in Yong Peng, says menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Onn Hafiz expressed full support for the education ministry’s initiatives, particularly the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic areas within school premises.

“We have received a report on the incident and will look into every angle and opportunity to ensure student safety is secured,” Bernama quoted him as saying today, adding that he would liaise with the ministry regarding student safety issues.

Onn Hafiz, who visited the victim’s family at Kampung Parit Selamat today, urged the public to give police space to investigate the case and refrain from speculation.

Meanwhile, state education and information committee chairman Dr Naqib Ghazali said the Johor education department and Batu Pahat education office would meet soon to re-examine safety SOPs.

On Oct 3, Irene Sofiya Khairoul Faisal, 16, was found dead in the school hall by her grandmother, who went looking for her after she failed to return home from a tuition class.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department chief M Kumar said an autopsy confirmed that she died from blunt trauma to the head.

Three 16-year-old male students have been arrested to assist in the murder probe, and one of them has been remanded for six days until Friday. - FMT
