Bersatu, and not the palace, has the right to select the new Johor menteri besar, according to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"This is (a) political thing. The sultan has got no role.
“It is for the party which won the election to determine who it (the next menteri besar) is," the Bersatu chairperson told reporters in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
Mahathir was responding to a question on whether he or the Johor ruler, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, would choose the new menteri besar.
Yesterday, Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said it is the prerogative of the sultan to appoint the menteri besar. The post fell vacant following the resignation of Bersatu's Osman Sapian on Monday.
According to Tunku Ismail, it was Sultan Ibrahim who made the decision to change the menteri besar.
"The decree to change the menteri besar was made long ago, but there are other people trying to claim credit and mileage, supposedly that it was they who instructed it.
"His Majesty looked into changing the menteri besar for many months. Do not forget that the power to choose the menteri besar is the absolute right of the sultan. Enough of politicking," Tunku Ismail said.
Johor exco member Sahruddin Jamal, who is from Bersatu, is touted as the frontrunnerfor the post.
Quizzed on this speculation, Mahathir replied: "I don't know."
Yesterday, Mahathir confirmed Osman's resignation and revealed that there are three to four names being considered as his replacement.
