Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali has vowed to settle any outstanding travel expenses required of him.
Asked about the recent suit filed against him to recover RM328,901 in unpaid flight tickets and hotel stays, he said he has yet to study the statement of claim.
“I have not seen the writ of summons but I have requested my officers to check the claim made by the travel agent.
“If there is any unpaid outstanding balance, I will need to pay up. It is my responsibility to pay up.
“[...] I will pay up but let the checks first be done,” he told the media on the sidelines of the Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals Summit 2019 in KLCC this morning.
Azmin shrugged when asked why YHA Travel & Tours (M) Sdn Bhd, which claims to be his longtime travel agency, was taking him to court.
“I don’t know (why), you ask them,” the minister said.
According to the statement of claim as sighted by Malaysiakini, the agency said Azmin owed the amount for travel between Sept 2018 and Aug 2019.
It said it had booked flight tickets and hotel stays for the PKR deputy president, his family, friends and ministry staff.
The statement also said the plaintiff had prepared flight tickets for Azmin's family year-end holiday in Morocco and his overnight trip in May to Sandakan, Sabah.
In August and September, the agency said it had issued two letters of demand to Azmin for the amount, but there was no payment forthcoming and hence the plaintiff said it suffered loss and damages.
