I'm not afraid to die - Health DG responds to Bintulu MP

"As a Muslim, I have accepted that death can happen anywhere. What is important for us is our intention, which is to carry out our duties and break the chain of infection."

These are the words uttered by the Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah this evening, when asked about accusation that he did not visit Sabah to monitor Covid-19 operations there as he "is afraid to die".

Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing had made the remark during the Dewan Rakyat sitting earlier today, when debating on the Supply Bill 2021.

Noor Hisham also dismissed the accusation that he did not visit Sabah.

According to the top Health Ministry officer, he had gone to the Borneo state in late August to see preparation by MOH for the state election, which was scheduled for September.

"And two weeks ago, I had my deputy, Dr Chong Chee Keong, go together with Tan Sri Dr Jemilah (Mahmood) to see our actions and Covid-19 management on the ground.

"So, there is no issue about that we are afraid to die," Noor Hisham said.

Tiong's remark had sparked a heated outcry in the Parliament.

Among those who had rebuked Tiong was RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong), who demanded the Sarawakian MP to apologise for the alleged insult.

However, Tiong, who is the prime minister's special envoy to China, refused to retract his remark. - Mkini
