Maszlee likely to be party-less until next year

Former education minister Maszlee Malik, who left Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) two days ago, is not expected to join any party soon.

According to sources close to Maszlee, he will be focussing on welfare work and activism in the Simpang Renggam constituency which he represents.

Sources said the independent lawmaker was adopting a wait-and-see approach because the political situation now was uncertain.

"Things will be clearer next year, especially after a Covid-19 vaccine is available and elections can be held. Perhaps he would make a decision then," said a source.

Maszlee declined to comment on this story.

Sources said he has been receiving "overtures" from Pakatan Harapan parties.

Ruling coalition parties have also been issuing invites "for coffee" to Maszlee, the sources added.

A senior PKR leader told Malaysiakini yesterday that he believed his party was Maszlee's choice.

"It is certain that he will join PKR to continue his political struggle," said the leader who requested anonymity.

Maszlee was among the pro-tem committee for Pejuang, which was founded in August by Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The Registrar of Societies has yet to approve the registration of the party.

In a statement, Maszlee, a former academic, said he hopes to continue in the "movement of change" for education.

Maszlee was alleged to have signed a statutory declaration where he pledged support for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to form a new government.

The authenticity of this document has yet to be confirmed. - Mkini
