Prisoners sing praises for healthcare workers as EMCO lifted

COVID-19 | Prisoners at the Alor Setar Prison have given healthcare workers a heroes’ send-off after the government lifted the enhanced movement control order (MCO) on the prison and its staff quarters effective yesterday.

A video clip of the event was circulated on social media and was shared by Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today.

“After accomplishing their duties, they (healthcare workers) leave accompanied by songs by prisoners who appreciate their hard work.

“Frontliners you are the real heroes,” he said in the video’s caption.

The video shows a group of people in plainclothes and facemasks triumphantly exiting the prison gates.

As they leave, they are surrounded by a song that beseeched Allah to aid the “prison heroes who put their lives on the line for the country, race and religion”.

The Alor Setar Prison was at the heart of the Tembok cluster and was placed under the enhanced MCO from Oct 6 until Nov 2.

The Tembok cluster is the third-largest Covid-19 cluster to date in Malaysia with 1,753 cases detected so far, including eight new cases today, out of 9,056 people tested.

Of these, 304 cases are still receiving treatment, including four in intensive care units.

The cluster was first detected after a prison officer started showing Covid-19 symptoms on Sept 21 and died on Sept 28. The death toll in the cluster has so far grown to four people. - Mkini
