SELAYANG: Police have obtained an extension of remand against four suspects linked to the odour pollution incident in Sungai Selangor.
Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni allowed an additional day detention of a woman who is a director of a roadworks construction company and six day extension against the three others.
The extension of the remand against the 40-year old will see her being held for an additional day tomorrow.
The other three suspects who would be held six more days are a 43-year old man who is also a director of the company, and two of the company's employees including two foreign worker from Bangladesh aged 42 and 33.
The remand extension for the trio starts tomorrow until Nov 23.
The four were previously remanded for seven days from last Wednesday (Nov 11) to facilitate a probe into the odour pollution at the raw water source in Sungai Selangor which led to the closure of the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant.
They are being investigated under Section 430 of the Penal Code.
The Section for an offence of mischief by causing a diminution in the supply of water provides for a jail term of between five and 30 years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The four suspects were arrested on Nov 11 following reports of water pollution.
It was reported that four major water treatment plants (LRAs) in Selangor were forced to shut down due to the pollution incident.
Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) said as a result, 1,139,008 accounts in 1,279 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat were affected by water supply disruptions.
Initial investigations conducted by Air Selangor detected a solvent-like odour emanating from Sungai Selangor. - NST
