Speaker ticks off Selangor BN reps after they don baju Melayu again

After several Selangor opposition assemblymen were reprimanded for wearing baju Melayu yesterday, several turned up in traditional wear again today.

SHAH ALAM: Selangor speaker Ng Suee Lim reprimanded several Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen today after they turned up in baju Melayu for the second day running.

Yesterday, Ng ticked off three opposition representatives for not abiding by the state assembly’s dress code by wearing baju Melayu instead of lounge suits.

“Opposition leader (Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman Rizam Ismail) had promised me, on Whatsapp, they will follow the dress code. Unfortunately, they did not do so.

“Why is it so hard to adhere to the ruling?” Ng said before the start of the debate on the state budget.

He said only Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PAS-Sijangkang) adhered to the dress code and urged BN assemblymen to emulate their PAS allies.

Yesterday, Yunus was among those who wore baju Melayu.

Ng accused the BN assemblymen of using the baju Melayu issue to “play up” sentiments against him as a DAP leader.

He said the assemblymen should instead speak up on substantive issues such as water disruptions and Covid-19.

“I will give you the chance to debate,” he said.

Mohd Shamsudin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong) denied any conspiracy against Ng and said he did not want to prolong the issue.

Ng interjected and claimed the opposition assemblymen were trying to force his hand and eject them from the assembly.

Several assemblymen were heard telling Ng to eject the opposition members.

“I have a high (degree of) tolerance,” Ng said, in refusing to eject them.

Housing and Urban Well-being and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Rodziah Ismail (PH- Batu Tiga) said Ng had made his ruling under Order 87 of the state’s standing orders yesterday on the dress code.

“The decision is final unless someone moves a motion to review the decision.

“We can then debate it,” she said. - FMT
