KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of schools in which there have been outbreaks of Covid-19 clusters.

So far 10 clusters, involving mostly schoolchildren, have been detected in Sabah.

State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the schools are to be closed for between two and three weeks, subject to instructions from the state health department.

He said the state Cabinet was concerned about the trend of infections in Sabah schools. “Hence, a proactive and preventive action is needed immediately to curb the further outbreaks at learning institutions in Sabah,” he said.

“Learning sessions for students facing main examinations can still continue according to strict SOPs which should be observed by all students, teachers and school staff,” he said.

Three clusters were reported in a single day yesterday and Masidi also announced two new clusters in Sabah today, including another school cluster detected at SK Dallas in Kota Belud. He said the Batu 24 Nabalu cluster involved at least 22 people comprising students and teachers, as well as their family members.

The other is the Pesiaran Palma cluster, which is a workplace cluster triggered at a General Operations Force base in Kinarut, Papar. A 36-year-old woman working there was identified as the source of infection. So far, 24 others have tested positive for the virus in the cluster. - FMT
