AG's unclear status raises questions about 'court cluster' - MP

The delay on whether attorney-general (AG) Idrus Harun will have his tenure renewed or be replaced raises many questions, specifically with regards to the “court cluster”, said Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran.

The “court cluster” refers to several high-ranking political leaders who are currently mired in various corruption cases.

“This (the delay) raises a lot of questions. Is it true that the cabinet and the prime minister are not happy with the AG because he is still prosecuting individuals in the famous ‘court cluster’?

“Or does the prime minister want a new AG of his choice to take care of the interests of Umno?” Kulasegaran asked in a statement today.

Kulasegaran reminded that Idrus’ tenure as AG will expire today if no announcement about an extension is made.

Idrus (above) was first appointed to the position by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin on March 6, 2020, to replace former AG Tommy Thomas, who resigned after the Pakatan Harapan government fell.

Kulasegaran warned that the position of AG cannot be left vacant.

The government has many legal decisions to make and without the AG to act as a legal adviser, many decisions will have to be delayed, he explained.

Usually, he said, the successor to the AG position would have been identified a long time ago.

“It is highly irregular and an embarrassment to any nation to have to go through this.

“Will the country not have an inspector-general of police (IGP) in the future due to similar delays, is that even imaginable?

“The prime minister needs to remember that there is also no caretaker AG.

“For such an important role, we must know what is the reason for the delay. The nation deserves an answer,” Kula said. - Mkini
