Supporters of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak confronted a group of DAP members after they held a protest against the former prime minister in Bukit Mertajam in mainland Penang today.
The group, led by Bukit Mertajam DAP Youth central committee member Lim Zheng Han, carried banners that read “national embarrassment”.
However, the protest only lasted around 20 minutes before Najib arrived at the Insa Dunia Food Court.
This is after their protest was stopped by Najib supporters, Lim later told Malaysiakini.
According to Lim, they called for a press conference this afternoon to condemn ruling parties including MCA for constantly supporting Najib who has been convicted by the court.
“As a former prime minister who has been labelled as ‘national embarrassment’, ruling parties especially MCA still support him, they lack political morality.”
“Not discussing political issues”
According to footage provided by DAP Youth, 8 DAP members were stopped by three men, who wore “Bossku” T-shirts.
One of them who was in an emotional state scolded the DAP members: “Today there is nothing political …… if you want to talk about politics, go to the corner.”
“Don’t talk about politics! What about the undersea tunnel project scandal? Are you being selective when it comes to corruption?”
The man is believed to be referring to a corruption case linked to the Penang Undersea Tunnel project involving DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng.
Meanwhile, another Najib supporter described the event as a “private event” and asked protesters to leave.
The protesters were stopped from giving statements to the media, and their banners were taken away by Najib’s supporters.
Lim grudgingly proclaimed the protest has ended and the group shouted “Tolak Najib”, “Tolak Pencuri” (reject thieves) before they left.
“Bossku” songs being played in the background
One of the protesters was seen being pushed by the men who are said to be Najib’s supporters.
Malaysiakini learnt that the protester is considering making a police report of the incident.
Najib then arrived with the “Bossku” song being played and a lion dance to welcome him.
Najib started the tour in Penang to gain support from the local Chinese community.
He was the keynote speaker at the 2nd Penang International Business and Investment Summit and met with Penang Chinese clan leaders. - Mkini
