Why was KJ not fined for fist bump, asks Muda candidate

PETALING JAYA: Muda’s candidate for the Bukit Permai seat, Azrol Rahani, has questioned the double standards in the implementation of SOPs in the Johor state elections.

This comes after health minister Khairy Jamaluddin was seen giving a fist bump to a supporter at the Barisan Nasional command centre in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, yesterday.

However, he was not fined for it, unlike Azrol who was fined RM1,000 for giving fist bumps to supporters on nomination day last Saturday.

“I am outraged that the health minister himself is able to get away with a fist bump when I was slapped with a fine.

“If fist bumps are not allowed, then it should not be allowed for all.

“It is additionally disappointing that this violation and disregard (of SOPs) is coming from the health minister himself,” he said in a statement today.

He questioned if rules and strict SOPs were only applicable to the opposition parties.

On Feb 26, Azrol was compounded by officers from the Kulai district health office under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 for failing to practise physical distancing at the nomination centre.

His campaign manager, Amos Thien, claimed the health authorities had “gone out of their way” to issue Azrol the compound notice, maintaining that they were “normal fist bumps” with supporters outside the nomination centre.

He also said the Election Commission’s briefing on SOPs for the Johor polls, which were attended by the police and health authorities, did not mention that fist bumps were not allowed.

He maintained that Azrol and his team had been complying with the SOPs and questioned why no action had been taken against other political leaders who made the same gesture. - FMT
