The Bar Council has resolved to back Malaysian Bar president Karen Cheah and her press release on Aug 19, which is now the subject of a legal dispute.
In a statement today, Malaysia Bar vice-president Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab said the council had decided so at a meeting on Saturday.
“The Malaysian Bar has always expressed and will continue to express its concerns on matters of public interest - the administration of justice, and the standards of the legal profession in the country.
“An attack on the president of the Malaysian Bar for doing so is an attack on the Bar Council, and by extension, an attack on the Malaysian Bar.
“The Malaysian Bar will continue its duty and efforts uninfluenced by fear or favour, and will not cower from any act of intimidation,” he said.
On Aug 19, Cheah (above) issued a press release on behalf of the Malaysian Bar to criticise former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his lawyers for allegedly abusing the judicial process during his appeal hearing at the Federal Court.
This followed complaints by Najib’s lawyers that their demand for a postponement was not allowed by the apex court.
Following this, one of Najib’s lawyer, Zaid Ibrahim, sought an apology from Cheah and warned that she would be sued for libel if she failed to comply.
According to Ezri, the Malaysian Bar, through its legal counsel, has replied Zaid’s letter of demand. - Mkini
