Bersatu ministers responsible too if economy fails, PM tells Muhyiddin

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob this afternoon hit back at his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin for alleging failure in managing the country’s economy.

Ismail Sabri, who is an Umno vice-president, said if his government fails to manage the economy, the fault would be with Bersatu president Muhyiddin (above, left) and ministers from the latter’s party too.

Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya, the prime minister said the task of handling Malaysia’s economy is not his alone but is shared by many including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Mustapa Mohamed (above, right), who is from Bersatu.

“About the economy, we have Mustapa Mohamed who is managing the economy. We also have the National Economic Recovery Council (NERC) which is chaired by Muhyiddin himself.

“This council also advises the government (on the economy), so it is a shared responsibility. If (I) failed, it means we all have failed.

“This includes NERC too. I do not know what the reasons are (for Muhyiddin to say what he said). I have just heard about this today. So I do not have all the details yet,” he told reporters.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin, who is Perikatan Nasional chairperson, said Malaysians are struggling with the depreciating ringgit, rising inflation and post-pandemic economic woes and it is perhaps best for the election to take place if the economy cannot be better managed.

Ismail Sabri said he will bring the criticism thrown by Muhyiddin to the cabinet meeting next Wednesday for discussion, and ask Mustapa to submit a report on the country's economic performance.

"I will bring this to the cabinet too, and all that had been said by all parties. If Muhyiddin said he wants to have the GE15 early, for whatever reason, we will discuss it in the cabinet, because we have representatives from all parties in the cabinet, including Bersatu, GPS and Umno," he said. - Mkini
