PETALING JAYA: Only the Cabinet can decide if the final report of a special task force formed to investigate allegations made in former attorney-general Tommy Thomas’ memoir will be made public, says law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
“If I’m not mistaken, it will be presented on Sept 30. It’s up to the Cabinet to decide whether it should be made public or not,” he told FMT.
Wan Junaidi said the next Cabinet meeting would be held on Friday (Sept 30) as Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is currently in New York for the 77th United Nations General Assembly.
He was commenting on a news report in which the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) allegedly recommended that the task force’s report not be made public, Wan Junaidi said the matter was for the Cabinet to decide.
The task force was appointed by the government to investigate allegations of abuse of power, interference in the judiciary, politically motivated prosecutions and other alleged offences, as outlined in Thomas’s memoir.
It is believed to have raised 19 issues of concern.
Late last month, Wan Junaidi said the task force’s final report would be presented to the Cabinet in the “near future”.
Apart from stating that the AGC did not recommend that the task force’s findings be made public, the news report also said that the AGC would not object if the relevant enforcement authorities and the audit department wanted to investigate Thomas.
FMT has reached out to Attorney-General Idrus Harun for comment. - FMT
