DAP raises RM1.3m for GE15 through digital sale of 'Langkah Sheraton' painting

The sale of 8,888 digital copies of Damansara MP Tony Pua's ‘Langkah Sheraton’ painting has generated RM1.3 million for the party's election war chest.

Pua, in a statement today, said all of the digital assets - sold as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) - were sold or minted within 28 hours of it being launched on Merdeka Day.

He said the NFTs are not open for trade on the Opensea platform and that DAP will continue to receive royalties for every transaction.

The work is a 121cm by 152cm oil on canvas painting.

Pua began working on this piece when movement controls were imposed in 2020 and after the Sheraton Move that caused the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

The artwork featured 15 very recognisable political personalities, mostly in faux renaissance poses. Upon completing the piece last year, it was displayed at Theatre Impian.

When announcing that the painting would go on digital sale last month, the DAP lawmaker said that he chose the NFT route so that the painting can be "owned collectively" by Malaysians.

“A typical art sale would be through an auction. Perhaps a taukeh will buy it for a few thousand and often see a painting will be stored in a collector’s private gallery or storeroom, while no government-owned gallery would acquire such a ‘sensitive’ or controversial piece, even if it was of historical import,” he had said. - Mkini
