Ex-British soldiers may get to visit Terendak Camp after all

Defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein has come to the aid of two British veterans who said they wanted to visit Terendak Camp to reminisce about their good old days.

PETALING JAYA: Defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein has instructed his office to assist two former British soldiers who served in Malaysia more than 60 years ago and are seeking to visit their old army camp.

Hishammuddin said he has ordered his office in the defence ministry to assist and facilitate the visit to Terendak Camp in Melaka by Frank Robinson and David Priestley.

“The army’s Third Division commander, Major-General Rashidin, will be in touch with the two ex-British soldiers,” he said in a Twitter post.

This comes just over an hour after FMT published the former soldiers’ wish this morning.

Robinson, 80, and Priestley, 73, were based at Terendak Camp in Melaka and the Johor War School in Johor Bahru from 1961 to 1969.

Unfortunately, their wish to relive their good old days by visiting the army camp was turned down by the military police sentries at noon yesterday.

According to a Facebook post by veteran journalist M Veera Pandiyan, they were told to get permission first from the defence ministry.

The duo, who are staying at the Ibis Hotel in Melaka, had expressed fear that they would not have time to apply and get permission to visit the camp as they would be flying back to their homes in Yorkshire, England, on Sunday. - FMT
