Filipino cops rescue Malaysian after online ‘sweetheart’ turns abductor

Police arrested two men, including a Malaysian, after the victim sent descriptions of them and their car.

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian woman’s first meeting with her online “sweetheart” turned sour when the man kidnapped her and demanded a ransom of RM26,000 from her family.

The woman, who was not identified, had met the man known as “Jerry” through a dating app and flew to the Philippines on Monday to meet him, said a report by the Manila Bulletin.

She was picked up at the airport by “Jerry” and taken to Carmona in Cavite, a province in Luzon, where she was held captive, said chief of the Philippines national police Rodolfo Azurin.

She was then forced to send messages to her family in Malaysia for a ransom of about 300,000 pesos in exchange for her release, said Azurin.

Unbeknown to her abductor, she had also sent descriptions of him and another man and the vehicle they were using when she was picked up at the airport.

The information enabled the Filipino police to launch a rescue operation to free her and arrest the two suspects, one of whom was a Malaysian man.

The suspects were brought to the national police headquarters in Quezon City. - FMT
