Hadi: PAS' religious loyalty oath more effective than anti-hopping law

PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today urged the people to have more faith in his party as all of their electoral candidates and leaders were bound by a religious oath, which is stronger than any man-made law.

Hadi, in his presidential speech at the 68th PAS muktamar themed "Prosperous Malaysia", said Islam clearly states that no man can go against God's law and this was underscored in the party's constitution with all their top leaders and electoral candidates required to take a religious oath of integrity.

"This measure is more effective than the new anti-hopping law that was recently introduced.

"By right, PAS should be given more trust because of this binding oath that is far greater than the current law with an expiration date," said Hadi to delegates gathered at the Kedah PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut.

PAS has consistently enforced the loyalty oath in the name of Allah as a means to prevent its lawmakers from betraying the party's struggle after an election.

On July 28, the Dewan Rakyat passed a constitutional amendment bill that effectively prevents an MP from switching parties mid-term.

The bill stipulates that an MP will cease to be a member of the Dewan Rakyat on two conditions - resignation from or ceasing to be a member of the political party that he or she was a member of upon being elected, or when the elected leader joins a different political party mid-term.

Meanwhile, Hadi stressed that PAS suffered no loss from individuals with no integrity who would "feel the heat even in an air-conditioned room".

"The party is not damaged. PAS continues to progress and flourish, with an increase in the number of members, divisions, branches and supporters.

"PAS has proven that effective administration can be implemented in states under its purview - Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah - as well as through several entrusted ministries, even though with limited powers," said the Marang MP.

The muktamar's opening ceremony this morning also saw the attendance of Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, Gerakan president Dominic Low, as well as local and foreign dignitaries. - Mkini
